TIPS FOR PROPER MAINTENANCE OF SYNTHETIC TEAK
GENERAL MAINTENANCE OF SYNTHETIC TEAK:
One of the advantages of having a Flexiteek synthetic teak deck is that it's very easy to maintain. Unlike natural teak, no maintenance regimen is required to preserve the appearance and health of your boat's deck. Below are some simple steps for cleaning synthetic teak, as well as other suggestions for things you don't need to do to ensure your deck lasts a long time.
SHIP'S DECK MAINTENANCE STANDARDS:
Simply clean with water and mild soap. The best time to do this is when you return to the dock after a day of sailing (which you should have done anyway, whether or not you have a synthetic teak deck). The closed pores of Flexiteek prevent substances from penetrating, as long as it's rinsed quickly with soap and water. If any stains persist, use hot water.
A NYLON SPONGE:
Combined with soap and water, it will help remove even the toughest dirt. Always use it in the direction of the material's grain; this will help maintain the cover's realistic appearance.
SANDING SYNTHETIC TEAK:
In some cases, when the stain is more stubborn or even a cigarette butt has fallen in, use 40-grit sandpaper: very gently and always in the direction of the grain. Flexiteek synthetic teak is a paste material, so its appearance doesn't change throughout its thickness. If you notice a change in color as a result of this process, don't worry; it will recover quickly with simple exposure to the elements.
THINGS TO AVOID ON DECK:
Shoes with black soles: on the boat, always avoid wearing shoes that can be worn on foot, especially on synthetic teak. Avoid placing heavy objects with pointed ends on the surface. Synthetic teak is elastic enough to flex and return to its original shape, but it's always good practice to avoid this type of contact.
HOT MATERIAL ON THE SURFACE:
Hot materials could damage the synthetic teak, although a good sanding job could repair the damaged area. It's best to prevent these situations; Flexiteek synthetic teak is a very durable material, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be treated with care and attention.
