People are coming and going, there are coupons, work needs to be done, and deadlines must be met. Everything would be perfect if it weren&#039;t for the fact that our decks are frequently damaged by the various workers on duty. Therefore, in this column, we will focus on the restoration of teak decks. To make things easier, we will proceed step by step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TEAK DECK BEFORE TREATMENT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The first step is to quickly vacuum the surface with a vacuum cleaner to remove any objects that could cause problems or cracks in the wood (screws, plastics, processing residue, etc.).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Next, thoroughly wet the wood. This has two advantages: it promotes the opening of the teak&#039;s grain and allows it to cool. This is because the work should not be done at high temperatures, as this can cause compatibility issues between the detergents and the rubber components, potentially damaging them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Apply detergent. Don&#039;t overdo it; detergents are usually very concentrated, so a small amount is sufficient. Apply to sections of no more than 1 m\u00b2 at a time. The detergent should be used with a soft or medium-bristled brush; avoid stiff brushes that can damage the wood surface. Brush across the grain of the wood, not parallel to it. This prevents deepening the grooves where dirt accumulates, prolonging the life of the wood and making the treatment last longer.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Rinse. Use a pressure washer to speed up the process and remove all the dirt that has risen to the surface, making sure to also remove any detergent residue. Remove any teak dirt that has dripped onto the fiberglass and side, as it can be very difficult to remove once it dries.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Applying the bleach. Step 2 is the most immediate because the contrast is instantly noticeable, but it&#039;s also the most delicate. Bleaching cleaners are highly acidic, so always use skin protection on any areas of contact. I recommend applying the bleach with a brush or sponge to minimize detergent waste. Spread a thin layer of the product onto the damp surface, and you&#039;ll see it rinse off immediately. Also, avoid working in strong sunlight during this phase, and work in small sections, rinsing thoroughly after each section. At the end of this process, you&#039;ll see your wood restored, and your boat will be much more valuable.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Protection. It doesn&#039;t end there. The wood needs to be protected with oil so that the teak regains its resistance to the elements (we discussed this in the article &quot;Teak: Joys and Sorrows&quot; in Mondo Barca Market No. 215, August\/September 2017). The oil should be applied to completely dry wood (about 24-48 hours after cleaning), using a brush or roller, ideally avoiding the hottest hours of the day. There are dozens of different types of oil available, allowing for lighter or darker wood tones depending on aesthetic preferences. I recommend using water-based oils; this way, you won&#039;t have compatibility issues with the solvents present in the wood, minimizing the risk of it dissolving. A few minutes after applying the oil, remove any excess with a microfiber cloth to avoid leaving any residue on the wood. Teak usually absorbs the oil completely within 24 hours, so wait at least a day to assess the outcome of your work.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TEAK DECK AFTER TREATMENT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>This tutorial will help you extend the life of your wood paneling, avoiding the annual sanding that many workshops perform to expedite restoration work, but which reduces the wood&#039;s thickness and, consequently, its lifespan on board. This work requires precision, patience, and a basic understanding of the materials and products involved, as even a small oversight can cause serious problems (for example, the fusion of the rubber components, which, once started, is an irreversible process). Therefore, if you&#039;re unsure, trust the professionals in the industry or trained personnel for this type of work.
